Section Four: The Unabomber had a Point

Lewis’s last section, “Four. The Unabomber Had a Point” wraps up his argument and book well.  He presents a few examples, but mainly he just explains his point, that there is a clear shift of power.  Throughout the first three sections, we saw this from the point of view of the “little guy” who was taking the power and making it his own.  Now we are seeing it from the point of view of the “expert.”

Lewis uses Danny Hillis and Bill Joy as the experts and shows how they want to avoid change.  Hillis creates the 10,000-year clock, and Joy writes about how technology will overtake the human race if we are not careful.  But as a whole, they just want to prevent change because they’re in control.

Lewis demonstrates why technology is the key ingredient to this power struggle.  With technology, there is always going to be someone thinking about how to make it better, easier to use, more convenient, or cheaper.  And with this, comes the fear of obsolescence.  As new technology is created, the door is opened for new people and companies to capitalize on these opportunities. The result is a shift away from the current experts to the new.
